A New Perspective At ASIS: Innovation Changing The Face Of Security

New products and innovation were the order of the day at ASIS this year, with many companies debuting products on the tradeshow floor. Many of these products seek to improve and expand the ability of those in the security industry to do their jobs.

Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC) recently announced such a product -- the VACIS® P 7500 inspection system, a compact, high-penetration and high-energy inspection portal. The system is easy to use and fast, allowing drivers to simply drive their vehicles through the scanner. But most importantly, it streamlines vehicle inspection and is designed to scan up to 150 cargo containers every hour.

“The VACIS P 7500 represents a breakthrough in performance for advanced security screening applications,” said Alex Preston, SAIC senior vice president and general manager of the Security and Transportation Technology business unit. “With minimum impact to commercial operations, the system offers a unique combination of safety, high throughput and high penetration in a small footprint.”

The VACIS P 7500 is ideally suited for high-volume ports and transportation facilities that require timely inspections of dense cargo. Clear scans can be achieved at speeds of up to 5 mph, allowing vehicles to continue moving through the portal. The system uses a low-dose compact 7.5 MeV accelerator with a high-efficiency detector array to produce high-resolution and high-contrast images. The low dose of radiation results in a system that requires less shielding and a smaller radiation restricted area than other X-ray units.

SAIC is a provider of low-dose cargo inspection systems, with more than 300 systems installed worldwide. The company is based in San Diego.
