Yesterday’s show brought a lot to the table. And Tuesday’s ASIS show has been a great follow-up thus far. Last night, Sony entertained a small group of editor’s at Paris Hotel’s Mon Ami Gabi. The food was delicious and the conversation went well. For the most part, there wasn’t much business talk, which is welcomed after a long day talking about everything from biometrics to badge holders. If you have time to stop by Sony’s booth, look for their two new PTZ cameras, which are the latest goings-on from the company’s security division. The dinner ended my first day at ASIS. This is how the day has been going for my second day of the show.
9 a.m. – Siemens holds a press conference, and the press turnout is positive. People are interested in what a primarily building automation company has to say. The company is here to introduce its newest product Siveillance, which combines situational awareness, decision making and command and control into one unit. Jens Wegmann, president of Head Security Systems for Siemens, begins the presentation by explaining what goes into today’s building technologies – building comfort, fire and safety and electronic security. Wegmann says that there’s an increasing need to focus on preventing and detecting incidents before they happen. And the company is beginning to focus on that through acquisitions. The company acquired VistaScape in 2006 and this year aquired NOVOtec, expanding its reach in the security marketplace.
10 a.m. – Meet with Firetide, a mesh networking provider. The company has been increasing its applications since I first heard of them a year ago. Today, it revealed one of its new citywide applications in Glendale, Colo. I also got insight to other exciting and impressive happenings with the company, which is under embargo until tomorrow, Thursday. I’ll reveal that information in tomorrow’s blog. I also met up with Privaris, which has an interesting product. Its biometric solution is mobile and it’s able to add portability to multi-factor authentication.
11 a.m. – Attend an educational session led by Roy Bordes, “What’s New on the Show Floor.” From the years of having attended ASIS, I’ve heard great things about this session. So I decided to make time this year to attend. Though informative, the session was subjective, and Bordes admitted that he hadn’t perused the entire show, which is understandable, but it led me to believe that there might be some other great products out there that Bordes and I don’t even know of because we don’t have the time to really search the floor. So if you have announcements from ASIS that you want to make sure we get, please e-mail them to me at ksanchez@1105media.com. Because of time constraints, we just don’t have enough time to walk the show and really just check new things out.
1 p.m. – Stopped by Northern Video to shoot some hoops. I made one shot and got a free mini basketball and a beer.
2 p.m. – Attend a Arteco press conference on preventing copper theft. The company is making great strides in helping utility companies create awareness of the security technologies out there that can help combat copper theft – intelligent video being the primary solution.
3 p.m. – This time is set aside to write stories for our ASIS e-newsletter. Tonight I have plans to attend HSM’s Customer Appreciation dinner where guests are invited to a helicopter ride over the Las Vegas strip. So as you can tell I’m quite excited about that. I’ll let you know how Vegas looks from up above in tomorrow’s blog. Stay tuned!
