Way Out West

A Whirlwind of a First Day
Wednesday, April 02, 2008

My first thought upon entering the Sands Expo Center Wednesday morning was “Wow—how many people are here?” The sea of people at the first day of ISC West, security professionals, integrators and end users alike, added up to more than 26,000, according to ISC 365. All day, they swarmed the exhibition halls and took advantage of all that’s being offered.

For me, this included meetings throughout the day with companies that are introducing exciting new products. Among these were 3VR, a company whose video analytics is light years ahead of anything else I’ve seen; STOPware, which features a visitor management system anyone could learn to use in 10 minutes; and Brady People ID, an organization that is revolutionizing its lanyard and ID card business in an exciting way: the green way. Brady’s new earth-friendly products include recycles lanyards, bamboo lanyards, phthalates-free badge holders and ROHS-compliant vinyl badge holders.

Another interesting development was the partnership between HID Global and Lenel, which was announced Wednesday afternoon. HID’s Edge™ family of IP-based access control solutions will now be incorporated into Lenel’s OnGuard 2008 Plus solution. Edge integration will allow Lenel to expand OnGuard’s capabilities to enhance its existing sites, provide comprehensive contactless smart-card implementations and meet the needs of users who want pure IP-based devices for access control.

“Both companies share a mutual commitment to providing open platform solutions aimed at shifting the existing physical security paradigm,” said Denis Hébert, president of HID. “Our newly combined offering will provide end users optimum value based on tomorrow’s infrastructure.”

“We both believe that the open-standards world is what this industry is headed toward,” said Luis Orbegoso, president of Lenel. “At the end of the day, it’s about giving more options to the user and letting the product speak for itself.”

Letting products speak for themselves is something many companies seem to be doing at ISC West. And with all the amazing innovation that’s going on, it’s working.
